Poem -

Legend ending

Deep within its pit of bones,

Under a heavy roof of stone,

An aberration, stirred upon dead thrones,

It slumbered no longer alone!

Emerald eyes blazing bright,

As lids rose like rising demons,

Illuminating its abode with eerie light,

Its nose, now fouled by humans!

Deep down, rekindled hatred brewed,

Awakend remembrances of injustice past,

Its wrath, though in slumber, has accrued,

With speedy stealth strike out at nemesis fast,

Soon, chewing upon meat and bone.

Its sanctity once more safe and sound,

Thoughts flitting, as it lays once more prone,

Detestable humans do a plenty abound!

Deep rumbling within its throat,

Decision made to burn the scourge of man,

Upon past glories its mind does gloat,

Upon its wings, mans destruction would it fan!

Emerging from deep within safe confines,

Hiss of steam, screeches past clenched fangs.

Everywhere is seen where man defiles,

Tale swishes like a cat, as rocks it bangs!

Spread before on a earthen tapestry of dereliction,

The once verdant forests of majestic trees,

Destroyed wantonly by the plaque of mans occupation.

A roar of angst, so deep, all before it flees!

The dull red scales, drink greedily from the sun,

Turning crimson red as the power grows,

Fire shall purge man when all is done,

Finally they will reap what the dragon sows.

With supple grace, its mighty wings unfurl,

Drunk upon the suns hot yellow rays,

It beats, as it prepares its body skywards to hurl,

And rain fire from the heaven for all of its days.

With mighty bound, skywards leapt,

Its wings rent air with unrestrained power,

For way to long the dragon had slept,

Allowing man to build tower upon tower.

***

Deep in what remained of once lush forest,

A lone white stallion trotted the quite lane,

Upon its back a young maiden does rest,

Holding onto nothing but its long flowing mane.

Its muscles rippled with each footfall,

Sending waves of power flowing through the earth,

To every virgin maiden, it answers their call,

Taking them, galloping and filling them with mirth!

Its single diamond horn upon a solemn proud head,

Betrays it for what it truly is...Unicorn!

Beast of mythical powers, almost all dead,

Yet here it is prancing gaily, not forlorn.

Upon verdant grass of luscious green,

As time slows like a trickling brook.

All about natures beauty can be seen,

But influence of man cannot be mistook,

Once upon a distant time, far to long ago,

Through meadows of grandeur and splendour,

Maidens did ride, free from what life did sow,

Laughing, frolicking, their cares they did surrender.

Once a proud and stern warrior,

Now a maiden consort, in time has become,

A playful harmless courier,

Dreaming of imaginary battles, yet to come.

Upon the grass the maiden now sits,

Stroking his flanks, playing with his mane,

While past heroics through his mind flits,

Slaying Wyrn and Dragons for immortal fame.

The sky roars forth a horrendous roar,

Eyes peal open, head strikes skyward,

Blood surges through veins like times before,

Its heart flutters, as its ears flick forward.

A Dragon beckons, maiden forgotten,

Laying frightened upon the evergreen hearth.

Horn blazing purest white, not seen to often,

Rearing, with unbridled power, hooves slam the earth!

It hears not the maidens frightened screams,

This majestic beast now alive with raw power,

Sees the blood red Dragon of its dreams,

Soaring high upon the sky, as mere creatures cower!

Racing upon the wind, the white light flashes by,

Diamond horn blazing, blinding light,

Inevitable doom for all, no matter what they try!

The Dragon circles, ready for a fight...

***

Two mortal enemies, prepare to meet their fate,

Each the last of its kind, never to be born again.

Each eyes each other with ancient hate,

Knowing full well the extent of each others pain.

For aeons both have battled each others brethren,

Slaying wantonly of each others kin.

Now they are the last of their kinds children,

Who need to pay for mans sin.

Gutteral roar tears the sky, as Dragon dives,

In answer the unicorn leaps...heavenward,

Both through age have become careless of their lives.

Up the unicorn goes, while Dragon speeds earthward.

Inhaling deep, Dragon breathes fire,

Burning trees and grass alike,

Setting alight this beautiful shire.

Horn blazing, parts the red fire strike,

Saving unicorn from crimson death!

Red and white blend in blur of agility

As Dragon wastes his fiery breath,

White unicorn grows in his ability!

Fruitless fire forgotten soon,

Land about burns in towering flaming wall,

While dark clouds gather as a relieving boon,

Muscles pumping, Unicorn leaps, neighing its call,

The battle seems to come to an end to soon!

Rising high into the darkend air,

The white shape flys into the red chest,

Impaling horn into chest without a care,

The unicorn had come out best!

Alas, a crack so loud issued out,

Searing white light, burst from torn head,

The unicorn earthward fell without a doubt,

Its pride broken, and the Dragon not dead!

Looking upon the Unicorn, now hornless,

The Dragon contemptuously hovered, teeth bared,

Its laughter now devoid and pitiless...

Inhaled deep its final fire breath prepared.

Bowing head, no more magic, prepared to expire,

The once proud Unicorn awaits its fate.

Around the fire rages, soon to be its pyre,

For escape it is far to late!

Drawing deep, the Dragon makes a mistake,

Sucking the diamond horn to its heart to pierce.

It screams its end as the last red fire drake,

With a whimper, it dies none to fierce.

It plummets, crashing to the ground,

Spewing earth upwards, to land upon the inferno.

Except for the fire, there is no sound,

Save the soft neighing from below.

***

A gentle soft rain, soaks, choaks the flames,

As a maiden, approaches the white horse,

No longer a unicorn with majestic claims,

But a meek thoughtless, spent force!

Brother Philip,

A few weeks ago or so...

I took notes which is something I rarely do...

Unless it's necessary...

I wrote down revelations 12: 1-2...

The woman, the child, and the dragon...

I was getting ready to do a story about it...

AWESOME!

Mental telepathy?

Hugs...

Phillip Arthur ...

I sometimes believe we are all connected somehow...a collective pool of thoughts or such, what one does not use, gets used by another. Who knows...Steve Green inspired this poem with a picture he postec with his poem, so hw awoke it. So tgank you for enjoying it and to him for inspiring it.
