Poem -

Let Him Stay

She sits on her front porch and prays to her lord
She is tired of seeing him connected to tubes and cords
She’s afraid that if she closes her eyes
She will miss the last time that he smiles or last time cries

The doctors say that the chances of him living are slim
But she holds on and hopes for him to mend
She yells out in fury and blames God for her pain
“Why am I the one to suffer? How is this humane?”

She is restless and you can tell her heart is cold
When the machine starts beeping at a rapid pulse
The doctors and nurses come rushing in just in time
She stares at the screen, confused by all the lines

A doctor tells her that her baby is slowly dying
The woman has no words; all she can do is start crying
She knows they are wrong and her baby will live
She has too much to teach him, he has so much to give

She wishes she could whisper to him to stay strong and believe
But he cannot understand the words that she speaks
She knows that God can save him no matter what they say
She knows in the end God will let him stay
