lilac moments

It was so very long ago
a lifetime it seems.
I had no idea
I was happy back then.
In the cool spring morning
the light is lilac drenched
the old porch trellis hanging
In its fragrant abundance.
Reaching for the coffee pot
We sit on the porch
enjoying a rare moment
of marital tranquility.
Our children still sleepingĀ
the youngest as new
as the springtime.
I remember always short of money
A list of chores always getting longer.
Somehow making the moment sweeter.
I looked at you then,Ā
I remember clearly.Ā
not as my wife orĀ
mother of our childrenĀ
but as the lovely woman
I could never get enough ofĀ
when we first met.
The fragrant breezeĀ
tousles your long hair
I think how sweet it would feel
Against my bare skin in our bed.
If only I couldĀ
have captured the purple
fragrance of the lilacs
and trap it in jar together
with this feeling of loveĀ
I had for you at that moment.
To open again and again
through the coming years.
If you were to ask me now
Were you happy back then my love?
There in the mystical glow
of a fragrant lilac carpet
in a distant springtime.
I would have said
Yes my love
Very Happy
So Very Happy
