FIRE LOGS + GIN STARS

Come up, says I
It's bonfire night, says she
Shall we light up the sky?
I chuckle....we'll see....
I thought fire logs and gin
stars?
Oh, and some low fat
snacks... ....yea...right...
Have you a torch? says she
It's bloody dark out your back
Is it really just us now? she
asks
Where has the time gone
We must be old now I say
We laugh, sing a song
One of the kids phones, hers?
Mine?
Difficult to tell
One of the kids kids phones,
mine this time.....hers...
As well...
What are you doing? they ask
Oh, just toasting the moon, in
the dark, out the back
Greeting the memories as
they stop by and bask
Are you drunk? they ask,
We look at each other, old
faces both
Recognise each other...
Laugh...raise a toast...

We pause,
Watch the fireworks in the
valley
Whoop, bang, fizz
Like our lives says I, as they
colour up the sky, take their
moment to shine
Fade fall and die
I pour us more drinks, there's
a chill in the air
I'm desperate to pee and
there's
Soot in my hair
She hands me a torch, watch
those steps, don't you fall
I'll put another log on she
says
On the fire, keep you warm
You've been keeping me warm
for 35 years friend, says I
