LOVE STARVED

LOVE STARVED

ACROSS THE SEAS SHE WAITES FOR ME
IN THE TROPICS OF GUYANA’S TALL TREES,
WHERE THE CREEKS WATER RUNS BLACK,
SO COOL AND REFRESHING
AS SHE SWIMS AND SPLASH.

OF AMERINDIAN DESCENT
MINGLED WITH NEGRO’S BLOOD,
HER SILKY SKIN REMINDS ME
OF THE MORNING SUN.

HER CHEEKS ALWAYS GREET ME
WITH A MYSTERIOUS SMILE,
SUCH BEAUTY I’VE NEVER SEEN
SINCE I WAS A CHILD.

HOW I LONGED TO KISS HER
AND HOLD HER CLOSE,
GETTING LOST IN TIME
AND NEVER LET GO.

BUT TIME HAS CONSTRAINED ME
ON THIS AMERICAN SOIL,
YET MY HEART HAS FLOWN
TO THE ARMS OF MY BEAUTIFUL WITNEY,
THE ONLY ONE, I’LL EVER LOVE.

WILFORD BARKER.
