Lucky Melodee In The Sixth

One day in the summer of sixty two, our family went to a horse racing track;
My Father, Mother, Melodee and me, to give our luck a crack!
Melodee was only eight years old, ten years younger than was I;
She was very lucky at playing cards, and thought she’d give betting ponies a try!
My Father let her pick a horse each race, that she thought was going to win;
But the first five came in close to dead last, so much to her chagrin!
My Father took one look at her, and saw the pout on her face;
He said, “Melodee, my sweet little girl, you’re going to win the sixth race”!
He went down and bet every horse, twelve, if my memory is right;
He came back upstairs with a smiling face, for he knew that he would be right!
Now the funny thing is the horse that won, was a long shot and paid very well;
He showed her the ticket, she smiled a lot, as her ego once again swelled!
All the way driving home on that day, she grinned from ear to ear;
My parents and I all did too, for we loved her so very dear!
We never told her what my Dad had done, how this tale had been unfurled;
For her happiness he would do anything, in the whole wide crazy world!
