Mind games
Winter came slowly that year.
Snowflakes waited patiently
In grey clouds for the signal
To fall one by one
In individual majesty.
The dog lay sleeping
On the silvered woodÂ
Of the old deck.
Taking the lastÂ
of the years warmth
Into his aged bones.
I sat in the old chair
beside him.
An old man and his dog.
Waiting for you to return.
The festive seasonÂ
was your joy.
I knew the ships
and trains would
Bring you home
 tuo me again?
Your odyssey
 to the new world
would end and together
we would welcome the snow
and celebrate our Christmas.
Then without warning
the snow fell slowly at firstÂ
then faster in a mist of crystals.
They reached my face.
Melted in my eyes like tears.
And my failing memory
awoke  from its slumber.
The snow tears
became real ones.
I remembered
There are no
trains and ships.
In your new world
That world that took youÂ
in the summer sunshine.
 A world of illuminated glory.
Far above the falling snow
Far beyond  my reach
