Mountains
The vast and varying peaks,
Born of earths fire and breath,
Slate grey, icy and snow capped,
A symbol of life and death
An overwhelming addiction to conquer,
To risk all life and limb,
To be starved of air until,
The lungs just want to cave in
To reach the summit peak,
And stand on top of the earth,
To view the world below you,
Unable to value its worth
The wilderness of the mountains,
Their beautiful threatening domain,
They hold you like a powerful drug,
To be climbed again & again

Mountains are awesome aren't they! Love the way you have described their majesty and the hold they can have over us. Love your poem x
Â
Yes they are, Being me. I’ve walked up a couple of the Yorkshire peaks & the feeling of awe you get standing at the top is incredible. I can see why proper mountaineers get the climbing bug. Thank you so much for your appreciation ?
Hi Tracy. A wonderful poem that captures the spellbinding allure of the mountains. I am a wanderer of the hills and mountains but haven´t been able to explore these wild and beautiful places due to the lockdown imposed here in Spain, so I thoroughly enjoyed reading your awesome write. Thank you for sharing it.
Hi Tony, thank you so much for enjoying the piece. You reaction to it was just what I was hoping. Escapism. Especially in these strange old times. I hope you & yours are keeping safe. It’s so alien to us all.Â
Yes, escapism is the word and I found that in your poem. Brilliant first verse that sets the mood, excellent! I love the outdoors, there are some impressive landscapes here in Andalucia, but I do miss the Lake District, Kinder Scout and North Wales not to mention the Scottish Highlands, they are all stunningly beautiful, awe inspiring and have generated a wealth of beautiful literature over the ions of time. Have you read Alfred Wainwright´s books? I recommend them. I hope you and yours are keeping safe too.
All of those beautiful places you’ve mentioned Tony are like heaven on earth. Wainwright’s books are fabulous aren’t they. I’ve also enjoyed documentaries about his books too. Wonderful. Spain is having a terrible time, as are all countries, but you seem to be getting really hard there. Thinking of everyone in these terrible times x
Hi Tracey. I hope you are very well. Great to hear that you have read Wainwright´s books. I would be interested in watching the documentaries about his books too. Are they on Netflix? Have you read Ted Hughes? A recurring theme in his work is nature and the environment. I am reading his Collected Poems, what are you reading at the moment? Yes, Spain is having an awful time as are all countries but due to the very strict lockdown measures that were implemented five weeks ago, this nightmarish, terrifying situation for all seems to be improving. Thank you for the solidarity of your kind words, thinking of you and wishing you well. X
