My First Love
A lifetime ago we escaped from our parents
It was the heat of midsummer the relentless sun.
By the edge of the lake the cooling waters
splashed our toes washing the sand from them.
Down deep in the pure cool spring fed water
Where minnows fed the Bass and lake trout.
We were two innocents baptized in natures glow.
Your soft golden hair and eyes of robin’s egg blue.
Do you remember how you escaped my grip?
And splashing free of encumbrance
Swam like a fish unaided for the first time.
Leaving your fear in the water for the last time
I think we were five then
Too small to be swimming alone.
I remember that was when
I fell in love with you.
Do you know you were my first love?
Even back then
When the sun shone forever
and my heart was innocent.
I still have the old place on the lake
Even after all these years
Even after we both grew up
and married others.
I see my children
swimming in the summer sun
as we did back then.
My thoughts of that day are sweet
No one else can ever be my first love
but you.
