Navy Blue Man

I dint recognise you when you walked towards me in your navy blue
I saw my own reflection and knew somehow we were two
And God staged a curious plan..to place a man of your distinction
in some precarious situation, to gift you with compassion.
And you went passing by..smiled and with a swagger, and in that sailors way,
your essence the taste of you, yet remained..and to this day
I recollect in dreamlike haze how childishly naive we both were, to foolishly ignore
the mysterious spirituality..of human bondage and yet we shut the door.
Phenomenon you, phenomenon me, we didn't recognise its worth, no tears
passed on by, that mystery, we call living and through decades the years.
Memories remained of a young man in navy blue and steamy windows of a motor car
on the outskirts of the city Sheffield..and yes we went that far.
Persistent memory and constant yearning, bitter sweet for me but not for you
You went with a wave of your hand, a causal kiss and tantalising grin, that smile.
married had a child..so did I and there we both stayed..there in limbo for a while.
Occasionally I saw you in my dreams on a plane a boat or train
I seemed to be just marking time, waiting for navy blue magic and standing in the rain
Wondered what you were doing, heard you were in Darwin or the Sudan,
You lived your life according to your great plan what a man ..an adventurer
universes to explore, humanity to adore, not an empty sail boat tethered to the shore.
But souls work in space and time..inevitable and unaware of a greater plan
One day life just happened ..and you walked back towards me..beloved navy blue man.
