you don't always have to win
My dad told me..
in his wisdom
that dads have
and keep hidden
until you
least expect..
just before you
think you're going
to get a clout
for disrespect..
you don't always
have to win...
why Daddy..
isn't that what
everyone wants..
a winner ?
he looked and said
as a young man..
in a strange country
a youth picked a fight
with me,
and they made it
a tournament..
and I couldn't back down..
they laid bets..
I was trapped by pride..
so on that night..
we beat ten barrels of shit
out of each other..
and I said this is mad
lets just forget..
and let us mad dogs lie..
and it ended...
it's easier to defuse
and accept than continually
batter on for no other point
than pride..let it go
so I learned.
to keep my battles contained..
I don't always have to win
and I'm happy with that

My dad once told me much the same thing, Pauline.
He said, "Son," (he often called me that), "the world loves a winner. But the ladies love to console a loser. Always remember that."
And, I have...
Well penned, dear poet.
~DeanĀ ;)

( on the other hand..it was fun )

This was very powerful to me.Ā You did a great job to describe a very important message
Thanks L. Barto and Greg.. It truly happened. But much more than that. It was in the fifties after the war, and my dad was german, there was more to it, and in a mining communith where things run deep. We all would like to win.. Sometimes we let others win and they dont even know.. You get it anyways. . Love all the poetry on here.Ā Xx
