Poem -

Ode to baseball glove

My grip is so tight on you it’s weird,
Everyone wants newer and better
I’ve had you for years and years
Even though we can’t talk, I owe you this letter.

I will admit, the pain gets worse through time,
Nothing lasts forever; get used to it
I can’t repay you for being by my side
Our connection made the bench the one place I didn’t sit.

My brother brought us together the day he left
Who knew you could put this much love in some leather?
With you on my hand, this has been our quest
Day and night on the field with you, in any weather.

Oh, how you’ve inspired me in many ways
A new mitt will break a bond I can’t mend
Why don’t I fix you and you’ll stay?
Goodbye my baseball loving friend.

Commentary:

I wrote this ode to my glove to show all of the memories that I had with it and how hard it was for me to go to the store and buy a new one. My brother gave me this glove as a parting gift before he left for the marines, so it felt wrong just abandoning it like that. Even though it is just a piece of leather, it felt like much more than that for me and that is why I felt the need to write this.
