Poem -

Ode to My Hens

version 2

See the Orpington; her life is short, unaware she's a coelurosaur.
She eats organic and roams free range, often acting a bit deranged
She’s buff and fluffy, lays brown eggs, and is known for her pinkish legs
She cannot fly, has never soared in the sky, not concerned she might get fried
Sunny-side up or over-easy we start our day from her labor
She does not know how thankful we are for putting breakfast on our table

I have not written a poem since high school English class. This poem was inspired by a text message I sent to my yoga instructor, reminding her to bring a dozen of her home-range organic eggs to trade for my organic stewed apples. Suddenly, this poem almost wrote itself.
