Old Man

Hey old man !
What are you doing trying to be cool,
writing poems and acting like a fool?
Your time has come and is gone,
your days have vanished with your songs.
So don’t go trying to lay it down.
You can’t be serious with all those rhymes.
It takes a whole lot of man to be straight,
to be a poet so-called.
If your dream is to be righteously hip
you better get on the righteous trip.
Ride cool in the stormy weather.
Take off and fly.
A pen is all you need to keep your rap,
to lay down your dream with a mighty blast.
But you can’t cop the dream sitting on a bench
scribbling out words by the inch.
To be cool it takes all that you’ve got,
to throw out your sound in movement and thought.
To be lean is so obscene
A life for old men who sit and scheme.
To get down you got to be strong
Give it all your body and soul.
Being hip is a full time job,
not for old men or little boys.

Rapping is not poetry, it's lazy normally I will not say something negative about a persons work, but I really dislike this piece for being so negative, some of the greatest poets were over 50 some in their 70s when they did their best work, poetry is not about being cool or the center of attention, its about portraying ones emotions, so people around you can feel what you feel and be moved in the same way that you are moved. poetry is not the attempt to push a person down to build yourself up, or berate anothers attempts at doing something special just because you are not good enough to outshine a another on skill alone. instead you feel the need to exclude a group, that is not poetry, that is not talent.

I would beg to differ that rap is not poetry.  Rap is another expression of art as is poetry. I welcome the criticism of my work as it keeps me honest.  This poem is about myself, a fifty-five year old white man who at this time of my life is reconnecting with my roots in the flower child generation.  All the things you said that poetry isn't I think are a part of poetry.  Poetry is sometimes about being cool and the center of attention or why else do we post our work in a public forum.  I agree that poetry is about expressing one's emotions for the benefit of others.  If I have pushed anyone down it is myself.  I was trying to express my feelings about some of my earlier work such as "Cosmic Ride" and Another Titanic".  I would never exclude any group from this wonderful gift of poetry.  I think our dialogue has shown the power of poetry to bring people together.  Thanks again for your comment.

We will agree to. disagree on some things but I will withdraw my statement about it excluding certain groups after discovering that this piece is about you
