ONAM:  A HARVEST FESTIVAL HONORING
KING MAHABALI (MAVELI)
Onam is a ten-day Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the state of Kerala, India. It is a joyous occasion that marks the homecoming of the legendary demon king Mahabali, who was once the ruler of the three worlds.
According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali, a benevolent king, was so popular among his subjects that the Gods became jealous of his rule. They disguised themselves as dwarves and sought shelter in his palace. Mahabali, true to his nature, offered them everything they needed, including his own land.
When the Gods revealed their true identities, they granted Mahabali a boon. He chose to return to the underworld once a year to visit his beloved people. Onam commemorates this annual visit of King Mahabali.
