Once a Slave

Born into America
Separated as blacks and whites
Dividedβ¦
When confidence is man is turned to ashes
And all the love is burned as it clashes
The hope we had for one another was soon taken away from our sisters and brothers
They were known as slaves
Some feared to speak
For some had fallen and some were weak
All put in shackles
While some fell to their feet
With no food to eat
Or no pride to speak
These are the memories that we keep
Are the days of freedom over and lost
Or are the days to freedom dead and gone
What will it take to stir them right
From their sedentary ways with all our might
Must they tear us limb from limb
Or take out every bone
As we shed our skin
Will they ever feel remorse for the pain they caused
Or the blood they shed as the bodies start to fall
But they will never see what theyβve done as wrong
Thatβs why the slaves must all stay strong
All they wanted was to be free
But never once did the whites agree
To be free you must pay a price
Weather its wrong
Or weather its right
To every man and every women
And every child thatβs been forgiven
And now the chain will repeat
In different ways as you can see
From chains wrapped around are bodies
As we struggle to get free
To the ropes around are necks as they hang us from a tree
And just when we thought that it was all over
The bullets were shot through our bodies
Its not overβ¦
And now till this day even though we are free
The world seems like we may just repeat
The struggles we faced way back then
And now are only hope is that God
Will put an end
