One off the list

'One off the list'

Where eyes used to sparkle
there's barely a glow.
where feet once trod lightly,
a shuffle, so slow.
That tablety smell mixed with stale perfume
replaces the freshness of youth in the room.

The TV is turned up
they all sit in rows,
while supper is mashed up
knees hidden by throws.

She turns to the window
what catches her eye?
A memory, a thought, of time that's passed by.

He's running to catch her
they laugh and hold hands,
each face full of love
each head full of plans.

He begs her to join him
what's left for you there?
A life that's so empty
barren and bare.

The nurse finds her taken
a smile on her lips.
Another bed free she thinks,
one off the list.
