Poppies--(A thought for the fallen on Americas Birthday)

Poppies
In the foreign sun the white crosses shine
Countless crosses line by line
Between the fallen sons we find
Fields of poppies blowing in the wind
Keeping guard on those below
Red poppies weeping row by row
They gave their future for freedoms cause
Soldiers fighting in foreign wars
Some no more than in youths prime
Fighting for freedom both yours and mine
The resting soldier puts down his gun
The poppies stand sentry in the sun
They lie here never to grow old.
Their memories never to go cold
The lost their lives so long ago
In summer’s sun and winters snow
In the spring the parents come
Wreaths of poppies for a long lost son
So many wars from so many years
Oceans filled with mother’s tears
We read their names on granite cenotaphs
See their faces on faded photographs
At home the fields of poppies say
Look over here mom, I am right this way
They lie below they gave their all
Answering the bugles call
All our young men lost and gone
We owe so much too every one
Between the crosses without a sound
The poppies weep upon the ground
