Relief
A tribute to those who fought in World War One.
Lest We Forget. We will remember them.
.
Spasm after spasm of pain have run through my body.
Finally, medicine can relieve me of the worst affliction !
Dressed wounds, causing many to treat me differently,
Indicate how lucky my escape from hells incarnation !
..................................................
A perfect storm headed unabated towards our position.
Brave souls battened down the hatches best they could !
Fury beyond comprehension struck without compassion.
Unequalled carnage showed force unable to be avoided.
...................................................
No experienced warrior was equipped for this onslaught.
The vast majority immediately took salvation in prayer !
In this frightening barrage my feeble frame was caught !
I constantly thank the Almighty that I am no longer there.

..a tribute to. The forgotten lads..who found theirselves on the front line in Winter with little or no preparation..bless them misguided souls..lovely to read this..
Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
We will remember them.
Wishing you the best. Take care.
Airplanes, tanks, machine guns, trench warfare, hunger, rats, terrible smells, mustard gas, bayonettes, trench foot....humans so cruel to each other. If only we all looked like puppies and kittens might we treat each other better. WWI - terrible and cruel warfare in addition to 20 million dying from influenza.
In the years marking the centenary of the First World War battles I have tried to convey, in several poems, the horror of this conflict. It is impossible to do. Millions gave their lives in this savagery...and after it came another world war to take even more.
We must learn from history and never again enter such a nightmare.
Thanks for your contribution to this poem. It is much appreciated.
