Runaways

I almost gave up today.

I Put down my pen and walked away.

I was afraid that my poems would be lost,

lost in the thundering herd.

I kept walking as fast as I could

hoping never to hear them speak.

My Muse called after me

as she had something more to say.

I covered my ears and ran away,

but she followed me anyway.

“I’m not finished with you yet.

I’ll be with you until the death.

As birds must fly and as fish must swim

writers must write or else they’ll die.”

So I sat down and tried again

to force the words from my pen.

To my surprise my words returned

and jumped with haste onto the page .

The end result is what you see,

another poem written by me.

So if your words have flown away

don’t worry they’ll return.

One day you will find them

 standing at your door,

the lost child who has run away from home.
