Save Our Souls

Save Our Souls

I demand to be heard.
I demand to fix the world in what little time I have left in it.
I demand to change the irreversible damage careless people have done to it
I want to fix the entire world around me
because no matter how hard I try
I cannot fix it myself.

As a child I would dream about being a teacher to lead kids to a revolution
or becoming a writer to preach change.
I would give the world peace
because I could not fathom why no one else saw that we are one.

It took me years to notice that
six year olds can act more appropriately towards a person of color
than their teacher.

In a small town there is no such thing as acceptance.
Acceptance is a word queers use to ruin a bigot’s world.
There are people who are happier to see someone waving
A large gun in the air than a rainbow flag.
Violence is less frowned upon than a happy marriage.

Only our technology has evolved.
When will our minds leave this mindset and catch up?
