Scurvy

I'm relying on the stars,
To get me by.
Once thriving ship,
Deteriorates to the sea.
We've all grown lethargic,
I don't know why.
We lack food indulging on wood chips,
That would explain the loss of teeth.
Direction is lost with thought,
Strange marks appear upon the skin.
Were plagued or cursed the end is near,
Sudden nose bleeds let the delusion begin.
Has it been weeks or months,
Stormy nights give way to the sun baking days,
Until I feel a pain in my bones,
A smell of rotting the crew decays.
How I long to hear from the crows nest
The call of land.
No body amongst crew,
Not even soul among man can bare to stand.
In fading sunlight setting,
On the worst to come.
Drifting towards death,
Over the edge of earth we fall from.

Thank you Cherie it is a tragedy that such an illness with an easy cure could kill so many travelers of the sea back then. So interesting couldn't resist writing about it. So appreciative of your comments thanks for reading.
What a powerful and deeply moving write. Such a poem of strength and bravery in dark times. Love it. Also found on shuffle sooo 1 out of 50,000+ chance of me reading this first go!
