Poem -

Shiny Red Shoes

As I wait for you here on this rotten old porch

And the flame, how it flickers

But my feelings stay sure

And I wait and I watch for your shiny red shoes

Pleading with nature and God that my cracked heart won’t bruise

Oh the nights how the wind blows through dry naked trees

And the bed how it creaks when he sleeps next to me

But the shape of the mattress just won’t fit his frame

And your faith and your love, well it puts mine to shame

So hold out your hand love, and I hold out mine

We’ll reach past each seaward ship covered in brine

And we’ll wonder through decades wherever we choose

But until then I’ll watch for those shiny red shoes

Now my nose is a scarlet and my cheeks feel the burn

But no wintery habits hold me back when I turn

And facing the sun I look into your eyes

At home in your arms till the day that I die
