SHOP ON THE CORNER

The shop on the corner of our terraced street
Was a place where all the neighbours would meet
This shop was just like an Aladdin's caveĀ
Folks were smartly dressed kids told to behave

Sweets were sold by the quarter in a jarĀ
Soap didn't have a wrapper came in a bar
Fish was wrapped in newspaper on a scale
Always the exact amount without failĀ

Newspapers were on sale both day and night
Bulbs were there should you be needing a light
Sad was the day when this shop was pulled down
Shops aren't the same when you head into town
