Skegness

town..on The Wash
regained from marsh and willow warble
for peeps to take the waters..
old Billy saw your potential
and King Coal ..
you served you country well
when the world was mental
Viva Skeg Vegas
the miners came
for a walk down the bank
a ride in the chair
a rest from industry
getting the sea air
the Devil he saved us..
we take the waters
down East Gate Market,
in Chip pan Alley..
in your painted streets
we willow wander the gaudy
our forks on guard
in the paradise you made us
you are a brightest gem
brighter than Brighton
shinier than Cleggie
a tower of candied strength
you belong to us
beloved Skeggie

Skegness is a town by the Sea in Lincolnshire. Skegness is where Billy Butlin built this first holiday camp, which was commandeered by the home office during the Second World War for troops, along with The Derbyshire Miners Home, which was built by The Coal Industry Social Welfare Organization on subscriptions by coal miners, to build a centre where families could recuperate or rehabilitate in pleasant surroundings. Skegness has been a popular resort for over a hundred years, with wonderful golden sands which are its jewel in the crown.
