Poem -

Society

Taken for granted
Because of my skin.

Taken for granted
Because of my sex

Taken for granted
Because of my age.

Taken for granted
Because I’m short

Taken for granted
Because I’m fat and freckled

Taken for granted
Because I’m quiet

Taken for granted
Because I’m legal

Taken for granted
Because of society

Taken for granted
Because I’m poor

Taken for granted
Because I’m not pretty

Taken for granted
Because I don’t wear makeup.

Taken for granted
Because I’m not famous

Taken for granted
Because of my clothes

Taken for granted
When it’s too late,
Because you still won’t hear us

Our screams of sorrow,
Our cries for help,
Our struggle to not drown,
Our fake smile,
The fake laugh,
The hidden face?

You still don’t see it?
Has society made you blind?
The need to hide in dark clothing,
The withdrawal,
The drop in our grade,
The need for sleep,
The bags under our eyes,
from lack of sleep.
The lack of laughter,
The fear of society.

You still don’t see us?
Look what society has done.
Broken families,
Broken lives,
New phones,
New pills,
Less income,
More homeless.
