Poem -

Soldier

Darling boy,
you’ve heard your mummy crying,
but that is nothing new.
You heard her crying yesterday,
and the day before that too.
You’ve seen her on her best days,
when her smile lights the room.
You’ve seen her on her darkest,
consumed in her own doom.
A little voice through the doorway,
when she has shut out the world around.
A softly spoken child,
who is so worried about his mum.
She wants to be your hero,
and to protect you from the world,
but some days she’s so distant,
it’s like she’s not even on this Earth.
You know your mummy loves you,
you’re the reason she goes on,
and there’s nothing in this universe
that will keep her from you long.
You’re the hero, you darling boy,
your strength inside so strong.
To cuddle and reassure your mummy,
although you don’t know what is wrong.
Mummy’s raised a soldier,
of that you can be sure.
She just wishes it was different,
so you don’t hear her cry anymore.
