Soldier

Soldier

Silently the figure bowed his head,
Weeping for a man now dead.
"Battles you fought
and battles you won.
But what good has
your sacrifice brought?
Why should your body now
lay in this eternal mist?"

"Why,son, do you ask such things?
Do you not see what
my sacrifice brings?
Delight and life now seeded
where hope and faith were needed.
Battles fought hard and true
not for me they were
But for you.
To the battlefield I was led.
I dropped my axe and saw
and traded them for knife and lead.
Freedom and liberty must endure,
but for pain and death
there is no cure.
As for me, now let me rest.
Through life and war
I did my best."
