Some things we are meant to lose

Some things we are meant to lose

There are some things
that we are supposed to lose.

Like the wife who fell out of love with you.
The Sunday sweater with holes in the elbows.

Old wedding rings put away safe now lost
Ice crystals on childhood windows
Just before Christmas.

Sandcastles that washed away in the foam.
Dreams from youth that fly away like moths
In the summer moonlight.

Innocence lost in a darkened room
With a tender lady.
Crystal wine glasses shattered on tiles.

Your forever faithful dog
Who died too soon.
The best friend who went away.

Letters of love that disappear in a sea mist.
Passions that fades with time until it melts.

The silence of rooms where memories dwell.
And return in the darkness like the stars.

These are the things
We are meant to lose.
