Sons of Calamity

You're so advantaged to have the confidence and competency to participate in adult life
Â
You have no idea how humiliating it is to be us
Â
We are the ones who had a kick in the guts that hit us out for six
Â
While we try to catch our breath all else we can do is watch your gold and silver laps of the pool
Â
We are the ones who had a smack to the head one too many times
Â
We've given up defending our cracked skulls
Â
And let the insanity of our dead brain cells poison us into a slow demise
Â
A social termination that laughs with you laughing at us
Â
By the time we awake from the coma it's game over
Â
And you patronise us from the windows of your fancy villas and luxury cars Â
Â
As we drown in pools of piss in the gutterÂ

What I got from this is it gives the reader a reality check. I have worked in hospices and took stock many times of how valuable it is to be me. To have the chance to live fully as a healthy human. To not have it cut short. This piece speaks out for those who can’t and it’s a powerful poem. People can be cruel to the vulnerable, I have seen it myself. Thanks for writing thisÂ
