Poem -

Stars

When I was a little girl

I drew stars

To calm me down.

Before I'd ever heard of

serotonin

or Prozac

or physiatrists.

A star to make you happy

A star to be your friend

A star to fight your nightmares

Screams "The End! The End! The End!"

They took me to big girl chorus

Where we practiced non-stop.

I drew

Star One

Star Two

Star Three

To keep the stress away.

A star to make you happy

A star to be your friend

A star to fight your nightmares

Screams "The End! The End! The End!"

I got caught

Drawing.

She asked

"Are stars more important than singing?"

And she made a baby feel guilty

For simply trying

To keep stable.

Years and years passed.

I never drew stars anymore.

I tried

But she made me feel ashamed

By haunting me from

Far away.

And I got

So

Tired.

No star to make you happy

No star will be your friend

A razor to your wrist that screams

"The End! The End! The End!"
