Startled in the night

(aging)

My shadow does not match my sense of self

It's stature somewhat stockier than I recall ever having been

Nose and ears a little big
like an ogre or an elf

Not like any regular portrait of me that I have seen

It appears to move so ever slow than my muscles ever did

And there is a shine and twinkle from the corner of its eye

Yes I don't recall it being a duckling since I were a kid

A Frankenstein freak that children want make cry

When I stumble through the house

And pass thresholds with thin threads of light

I flinch to the movement of what may be a thief or mouse

My shadow plays such tricks as gives me quite a fright

Behind heavy brow now balding

Leans upon a walking frame

With whiskered chin protruding

I don't believe we've met that I should know his name
