The Last Kiss

It was that terrible Tuesday morning, that I had to say goodbye;

I’d been lying beside you the whole evening, and all I’d done was cry!

We had found you at eleven, beside your little bed;

Asleep then for forever, the thing I had most dread!

I screamed “not yet, not yet, oh God, not yet”, for I had thought you were going to heal;

I never dreamt the two spoons of food you ate, would be your final meal!

While I wailed wracking sobs of unknown pain, your Mommy cleaned you up;

Then she wrapped you snug in a pink blankie, our beloved little pup!

We brought you to our bedroom, and turned on the music you always loved;

Then till seven in the morning, we sang prayers from up above!

We built a sacred shrine for you, with all the remnants of your life;

Your leash, your bowl and many things, that sliced our hearts just like a knife!

Then the sun rose and the time had come, that we had to let you go;

It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, all I could say was “no, no, no”!

I carried you in your blanket and beddie, to the front seat of the van;

The place you loved to sit in, when on a bye-bye, there you ran!

My body lay in pieces; I was too shattered to ever drive;

Mommy was taking you to be cremated, so your ashes would be ever in our lives!

I bent down and gently held you, then gave you that “final kiss”;

I’ll never be the same again, for you I’ll ever miss!
