The Moment

The Moment

Will I know your name before we are gone?
Or are you just another wave in the distance...
headed this way by sheer coincidence?
Brightening my day in serendipity?

Is the smile I see simply glanced right through me?
An empty apparition of its target's conceit?
And will your recognition of its collateral damage,
trigger its beauty to quickly retreat?

Or...could it be...

That you are one of the faces of my many tomorrows?
one of the hearts that will share in my tears...
One of the knowers of my joys and sorrows?
One of the souls that I will love for years?

I close my eyes and try not to hear
the booming "hi" that has rapidly followed.
For from just behind, your suitor appears,
and the moment has left my hoping heart hollowed.
