Poem -

the one promise I kept

There was once a day
I looked to you like a deity,
like you were some sort
of holy thing.
With you,
I was married to my faith.
When you left,
you robbed me
of my own religion.
Were you not the gospel
all along?
You are my greatest weakness,
as I've told you
countless times
when I was drunk on "what if"'s.
I always thought
it was a good thing.

With you as the bar,
everyone after you falls flat.
Everyone bores me,
everyone loses my interest.
They aren't you,
how could anyone live up
to the standard?
Your shadow
is what everyone after you
has stood in,
and will continue to stand in,
but I will one day
find someone who stands taller
than you did.
I promise.
