the poem that didn't age well

I can't be delusional
and think I'll rule a country,
or that I'll be your number one person.
I can make peace
with that.
I wasn't meant to rule.
I was carved out from stone
as a legend, not destined
to be your darling.
I'm not your number one,
but you are mine,
and that's enough.
That's right now.
I am in the moment and even if
I am only one star, even if
you are my galaxy,
I am content, because I am something.
I'm made of matter and atoms
and flesh and blood
and a purpose.
You were too,
and we weren't woven together
by space and time
and maybe that was
an even better creation
than a package deal.
Maybe we're more beautiful this way.

Maybe the stars
will change their mind,
but that's their choice to make,
I won't dwell
on their decision.
I'm happy either way
because I'll never lose you,
you promised me that much.
I will never let you wander off through the universe because
I will follow you to the darkest edges of time itself.

I want to chase comets
and laugh even though nobody
can hear me,
I want to feel gravity's pull,
I want to float freely,
and I want to witness the solar flares.
If I have to settle for seeing waterfalls, islands, landmarks,
and sunrises,
then so be it.

Maybe I'm not meant
to travel space and time
because I wasn't built for such regions
but I'll travel the world
and I'll wish you were beside me to see it
because you are my number one.
If you aren't beside me,
I'll send you photos
and I'll text you at 4pm
when you're getting home from classes,
even though I've stayed up all night just
waiting for you. 

With or without you by my side,
I will do great things.
You can still be my number one
and you can still be breathtaking,
but I am my own,
and you are
yours.
