The Sky Isn't Always Blue

The Sky Isn't Always Blue
By Maryam Safi

You stared up at the sky,
Lying on your back, wondering why.
Why was the sky not always light, not always blue?
Why was it dark and gloomy when you're cut through?

There are days when the sky isn't blue, when it's dark.
Days where there is nothing out there, not even a spark.
There are nights when the stars don't shine as bright.
Nothing to guide you through the night, no light.

How come when you feel sad,Β
The sky, the stars, feel twice as bad?
You thought the sun, the moon, the stars were there for you.
But even the sky isn't always blue.

Yet when you see that one spark of light peek through,
You realize that, somewhere, there may be hope for you.
Maybe the world wasn't such a cruel place.
Maybe you were just going through a dark phase.

But then it all comes tumbling, crashing down.
You hear them whisper quietly, but for you, it's too loud.
β€œGo back to your country,” They whisper.
β€œYou don't belong here,” They husher.

It's not your fault, your friend says.
They're being ignorant, your family says.
They say that the sun shines with sun rays.
But they never asked what you'd say.

They say that the rain, the dark doesn't last.
They say to hope for the future, forget about the past.
How do they expect you to forget who you are?
Do they not know your dark, sorrowful mind that's went very far?

You've traveled lengths through your mind.
Not my mind, you can't look through the folds of mine.
Our minds can be very dark places, even if we're happy.
Yours was the darkest of them all, but they didn't know you were unhappy.

You feel like you're crazy, like you're out of your mind.
You claw at your skin, wanting to get out, just to be fine.
This was not you, you weren't so dark, so sad.
You weren't such a pessimist, the world wasn't so bad.

You stood in front of the mirror, staring.
You stared at your once light eyes, wondering.
When did you become like this, so dark, like a night with no light?
When did the night become so dark, with a moon not so bright?

You knew the answer to that.
When people started to hate on you,
That's when you became a black soul under a happy hat.
No one realized how weak you were, how you were cut through.

You weren't always like this,
You were once full of bliss.
I didn't realize that I was you until
Your dark world brightened up a bit.
