The Small Space Between Us

The Small Space Between Us

There was a time when,
In the small space
Between us,
There was nothing but that; space,
And time
And the burning, blazing love
Between man and woman.

There was chance for us to spread,
In the small space
Between us,
Like stars,
Becoming intertwined-
Interlocked-
Under the sheets
Until it was impossible to tell where
Man stopped
And woman began.

There was room for improvement,
In the small space
Between us,
Sometimes it grew wider;
Colder,
Bodies refusing to touch
But souls reaching desperately
For one another.

There was temptation,
In the small space
Between us,
On occasion
Thoughts of another man
Fantasies of other women
Filled the void
Whilst one lover was away
But reality soon banished such idiocies
When true love returned
To take back its rightful place

There was hope,
In the small space
Between us,
That our love would be eternal,
That our vows would hold out
'Til death us do part,
That the last three years were just the beginning
Of a life filled with love and joy.

And then there was you,
Kicking and wriggling,
Crying and dribbling,
Suckling and snoozing,
Dreaming and growing;
All
In the small space
Between us.
