The Story of My Life

I awake from nonexistence
To find myself shoulder high in a sewer
The ignorant universe chants "swim"
Â
I feel my way blindy for a footing
A chip of magnetic stone barely attracts my numb toes
Â
The shit starts rising
But the rock doesn't
Â
I can make out a pile along a shoreline in the distance
"Turtle Food," reads the sign
Â
A turtle straddles by
"I'll give you a log if you give me grub," says he
I could get to the turtle food if I had that log
"Can I get you the grub in an hour or so?" I bargain
"Sure." Says the turtle
Â
The log is slippery
It spins and evades me
It carries me where I don't want to go
In circles
Â
Creatures look on
"Oh, God love him..." Say some, "he's learning how to swim."
"He's so lazy he needs a floaty". Say others
"He'd better move faster before the next wave."
Â
The tide drags my gyre away from the bank
Â
An hour has passed
"Where's my grub?" Asks the turtle
"I don't have your grub," say I
He takes back his log
Â
I feel my way blindy for a footing
A chip of rock barely magnates my numb toes
Â
The shit starts rising (...)
You get the picture
Â
(...)
Â
One day a voice says, "See that?"
I see a floating piece of pumice
I take hold
I bind it to my chest in scraps of plastic
I start swiming to shore
Â
But it isn't land
It's just an isle of shit
Â
I still scam logs off scammers
There's no other way to be in a sewer
Â
But one day the mountain ice will melt
And all this shit shall be gone
