Poem -

Their Eyes were watching Childhood

Their eyes were watching childhood

It sang endlessly in sleep

Their hearts were warm and safe

Very seldom did they weep

Their hands were grasping boyhood

The sun gave endless rays

A friendship was a friendshp

To last through many days

Their arms were holding girlhood

And life would take them far

Hand in hand, they watched

They gazed on a summer star

Their backs were raising progress

In school, they grew together

Sad, but proud parents watched them

Through windows, in all weather

Their bodies held each other

And they were together at last

Touching for an instant, always too fast

As each silver moment faded into past

Their heads grew hard and weary

As life revealed its face

So they could play no longer

Their game became a race

And it was no disgrace

Because they couldn't keep the pace

Love and friendship gone, without one ragged trace

Their eyes were watching childhood

Only without speaking for years

No time for mercy, only to harden

As each battled their fears

The other side was empty

Their memories grew dim

But stars still shine on a summer's night

Although they may have lost the fight

They still drank their fill

A cup full to the brim
