This is How We Do

What do we do when we can’t face the world?
We take pills
We get inebriated until we see twins or sometimes if we’re lucky, triplets
We scream at the ones we profess to love
We cry because of the one who profess to love us
We go to rehab because the white padded room blocks out all of the noise down to the very whispers in our minds
We hurt ourselves
Leave everlasting marks to remind ourselves
This is how we do
We allow people to shout at us until we’re black and blue
We return so they can make the outside match the inside
We take a pill to reduce the throbbing and then another to force a smile
We try to find happy-ever-after and end up saying ouch
We hurt ourselves
Leave ourselves open because we’re told not to guard ourselves
This is how we do
We spill what's inside into the throne because it’s the outside that matters
We’re told to listen and we do so too well
We go to higher places, but descend lower than the fiery depths to get there
We discover that doing whatever it takes requires means giving up whatever sheer innocence that's left over
We hurt ourselves
This is how we do
Because this is the world we live in
