Treading Water
Like 2 Pin it 0What is stamina
With poor technique?Physically strong
But mentally weakTrying to keep up with the athletes
Who are at their peak
Watch how they
Gracefully glide through the pool
Faces down In the waterThis is to swim properly
Can't do it
Although I ought'erAll I manage is to ungracefully
Tread water
Every time I immerse my head
I cough and I splutterJust the cold of the water gives me the chills
Bukowski
Gibran
Blake...
Lend me some gillsMeaningful metaphors
Dictated by rhyme
Creates prisons of words
Always there to remind...In some abstract way
A clock's a jailer
To timeWithout instruments
To measure
How each day ends and is begun
Stripped back to the simplistic
Miracle of the rising
And setting of the sun
Poetry without rhymes
Is how the most popular poems tend to be
To me it seems so unnatural
A piano playing out of keyHowever...
Popularity isn't something I crave
Being true to myself
I ride the crest of my own waveTake a deep breath
Analyse
Scrutinise
Disect
And digestFirst thing for breakfast
I need
The pages of dictionariesWashed down with
The visions of visionariesA Nonconformist
In a conformist society
Drinking twice as much
Like I'm preparing for sobrietyCider
Larger
Vodka
Blackcurrant =My drink of choice
A turbo diesel
My prop
My elixir
A necessity...My artists easel

Thanks For the chance to read this
John
You're welcome John and thanks for reading also. I had marked this poem for deletion as I feel that I'm not being true to myself anymore. If you have any tips or advice then I'm all ears. Expression through simple poems was something I used to enjoy but now I feel I'm moving away from that. Writing for the wrong reasons if you will.
Sincerely - Syd
I think if I explored my reasons for writing I would quit
All theses years I write because I have to,
I write to see who I am.
I take giant steps and faltering steps all to a common goal.
Write to Be, and Be to write.
And artist soul just is
John.
Cheers John, each to their own then I suppose. The one thing I just don't want to become is someone who only writes for popularity, without having any motive or message to my poems. Thanks for your honesty. Appreciated.
- Syd
I agree 100%
if you like what you write
you win
john
?Thanks

Hey Syd...
..."preparing for sobriety"...??????
I recall drinking that recipe of yours and used to call them 'Purple Parachutes'...
hahaha... Thanks for the recall... Think I might try a few again!?
This poem and your subsequent thoughts in response to JOHN'S, own insightful and inspiring and reassuring comments (??), resonate immensely!!!
Also to echo... or at least certainly to agree completely with John...
It never fails to amaze me how inspiration arrives from an inexhaustible array of sources... And exploring ones expression of those helps to create and discover our own unique lyrical/poetic voice and/or voices... And to evolve them... At least attempt to!?Haha
Who knows where inspiration and following our own instincts may lead...??
Rock on mate!
Cheers??????
Thank you Blake for your feedback. Purple parachutes....I've never heard that one but it is quite fitting. I've had a few of those tonight so apologies if my reply doesn't make sense lol.
I also see you're a floyd fan. I made the pilgrimage to see Roger Waters - The Wall in 2011.
I look forward to reading more from you.
Take care my friend - Syd
