Two blue balloons
Weightless but heavy

A silver streamer is tied to their lips,
Bobbing and tumbling,
Kissing the curb,
Rolling at tyres,
Gingerly trying not to disturb.
They're politely speckled with raindrops,
Rubber taut and sheer,
Deflated a little,
With no chance to float,
They're just too brittle.
Once upon a time,
Did they don a door?
But blow away from that party,
To tumble on the street floor?
Two lonely long spheres,
Destined only for smaller,
Once greeted a gifted guest,
Another birthday caller.
Cupcakes, glitter and fingers of fish,
A serenade of joy, an inhale and granted wish.
Coloured cones on heads,
Tightly secured with string,
Pastel table cover,
A spread fit for a king.
Waves of wrapping,
A crinkled mound on the floor,
The door has stopped tapping,
The guests couldn't have brought more!
Escaping down the pathway,
And out onto the street,
One for each year,
And a knot for each teet.
Enter cling wrap and tin foil,
Paper plates in the green bin,
Dada smiles at Mama,
Candles back to baking tin.
The first to leave the party,
Is usually not having fun,
This duo has fled,
Just as the singing had begun.
A shiny box, toy horse, car and a truck,
Aneenaw, a yoyo and kids run amock.
One for each year,
But blue for the boy,
The two blue balloons now rest on a ledge,
Now, nature's toy.
