Unsuspected Friend

Unsuspected Friend

It's funny

the way a person's mind can change,

evolve.

How darkness used to make me cringe

The way it could creep up on you,

wrap one slender finger around you,

and then engulf you in a million.

The way it lurks and lingers,

the same way your favorite fairy tale monsters do.

But now those fingers seem inviting,

accepting.

Willing to take you in, learn your secrets,

and protect them.

So i sit, comforted by the unsuspected friend

and tell it all the words I've left unsaid and

all the thoughts that have kept me awake at night.

Silently hoping that there really are such things as boogeyman and ghosts

that could take me away from this place I call home.
