Voice Of Reason

In gunfire and shelling comes a moment of clarity.
Before him lays a vision of the world that could be.
Calm prevails there to offer a life he once sought !
Bloodshed is not the norm, a bewildering thought.
After years of combat with hope long extinguished,
This escape from battle is more than just wished !
Nothing has prepared him for this unusual release.
For only this moment he succumbs to a lost belief !
.............................................
The voice of reason has sparked in his weary mind.
This indulgence comes from a place felt left behind.
Stunned by this welcome return to blessed morality,
He becomes transfixed by overwhelming humanity !
The bullet hits restoring awareness with cruel venom.
Falling to earth he instantly realizes what is to come !
Lying waiting for the inevitable to take his soul away,
He simply smiles understanding his fortune this day !

Hi Richard...This is beautifully written....The soldier accepting his fate...It's a tragegy but I had a smile on my face when I got to the last line...
I felt this story with its tragic conclusion put across the horror of war and how the battlefield affects souls.
So pleased you found much in this piece you could relate to.
Take care. :)
