Where have all the Nuns gone ?
When I was only small
I remember them so well
Black garbed cloaks with trimmed white shawl
as they rang our town church bell
One never walked outside without the presence of a Nun
I always felt sorry for them so covered in black amidst the heat of the Summer sun
Where have all the Nuns gone ?
All the nunneries are closed
There are no religious ladies wearing habits unexposed
Has religion deminished ?
Is devoutness dying out ?
They talk of alternative spirituality
What is that all about ?
“Our ladies of the Lord”
My Mama used to say to me
but just the drab, darkness of their dresses totally scared me
I recall they never smiled or greeted anyone nor did they ever show their hands when all was said and done
Only their faces were visible of these old frail females
I thought Nuns appeared very cold and as hard as nails

Where have they gone! You are right, there was always a nun walking round somewhere. I remember seeing them in black and in dark blue. I do remember them smiling though. I must've been very young. I haven't seen one in years and I hadn't even thought about it until now x

I agree with you Jill, they have all gone..when I was young also they were common on the streets, they always terrified me too!! Though I think it is the idea of being enclosed in a piece of clothing that sacred me, not the nuns themselves
