Poem -

Why are you Crying Heather Brown

Why are you crying Heather Brown?

Is it for the empty cradle,

that you are rocking every night,

Β Is it for the sad and lonely clown,

whose face was always white?

Or is it for your hero

that died in the picture show?

Are your tears for the singing cowboy

from the one horse rodeo?

Are there colors to your rainbow?

Or is your world a pale grey?

Are you weeping because your tomorrows

will be the same as yesterday?

Why are you crying Heather Brown?

Is it because you miss the music

the band was playing

when you were in town?

Is it in memory of the dances,

of the boy who held you tight?

Or is it for the lonely clown

whose face is always white?

Do you weep for the soldier’s picture

whose face is stained with your tears?

Is it perhaps for the lock of brown hair

you kept safe for so many years?

When you peer into the mirror

do you see the face of the clown?

When you close your red-rimmed eyes

can you see the face of your heroΒ

just before he died?

Do you still miss the singing cowboy

from the one horse rodeo?

Can you still hear the music

they always play in town?

Can you tell me why

you are crying, Heather Brown?
