Winter to Summer

References to Joni Mitchell's "The Last Time I Saw Richard"

Winter to Summer

We waded through your sea of empty bottles
Filled with time and counsciousness
Locked in for infinity, with echoes of winter
And the sickness that you thought was your medicine
You burned alive in the cold confinement while screaming aloud of liberty
You kept away from mirrors with ears and tongues that impale
Your infection spread quickly until our blood supply was soiled
Until you could finally behold this truth upon the wreckage of my body
Until I cut you off my fingers, despite my dread of your bloody, bitter wails
I left one still in tact for flow of only good
Alas, the spoil still finds its way in, and yet healing came to me
And toward you the healing casts it's light
My close figure no longer keeping you shadowed

Springtime offered me immunity with the great healer of my hands
And I bloomed in defiance of thorns who choke
I got my wings for flying to shelter, a refuge from violent downpour
But for now the sun of solstice is disarming and kind
All our nearest stars are incandescent with love so sweet
So sure and oh so sweet
Could I ever again become so very ill, sore and secluded?
All I can think as I drink in the warming glow of summer
Is that it might be the end of my dark cafe days
Where I hide behind your bottles
