Wonderland Avenue (part2)

Wonderland Avenue (part2)

Danny was overwhelmed with grief for Jim
He didn’t think the pain was ever going to stop
He drank and did drugs for weeks on end
Until one weekend at a concert he met James Newell Osterberg Jr - aka Iggy Pop

Danny had always been a fan of Iggy
Iggys career had took a downturn, as he still hadn't made it
Together with the last of their money
They rented a beach house that was run down and dilapidated

For weeks they lived like this
The living conditions were insane
Living hand to mouth
Or in Iggys case, smack to vein

Danny dropped by the Doors' old office one day
To collect some memoriblia, and to see what was up
He bumped into Ray Manzerick
When Danny left the office he couldn't believe his luck

It turns out Ray had quit the Doors
Touring just wasn't the same to him
The Doors were no longer the Doors
Not without Jim

Ray was looking for a manager
He wanted to record solo
This was Dannys calling
He'd always envisioned having Manager on his portfolio

They needed somewhere to record
A fresh start in someplace tranquil and new
Danny said I know of a place for sale
A place down on Wonderland Avenue

Ray gave Danny his Doors credit card
Told him to get a car and treat himself
Danny still couldn't believe what was happening
In 24 hours he'd gone from poverty to wealth

He moved into Wonderland
With his girlfriend and Iggy
There was no time to waste
It was time to get busy

Up until that night
The hardest drug Danny had tried was coke
He'd had no fancy for heroin
Iggy had warned him that the stuff was no joke

He was on his way to the bathroom in a club
An old school friend offered him a line
He also said something else
But Danny didn’t hear in time

When he emerged from the bathroom
Danny was smiling from ear to ear
He'd just done four big lines
This wasn't cocaine, this was some other gear

All of his worries evaporated
Along with all his cares
Just then he lost consciousness
And tumbled down the stairs

When he awoke he was back at Wonderland
Concerned friends slapping him on the face
Danny didn't want to wake up
He wanted to stay in that happy place

For most of his life he had suffered
From unnecessary worries and from ADHD
Heroin slowed everything down
Made Danny the person he wanted to be

I feel with this poem I have bitten off more than I can chew
I was hoping to have it finished by the end of part two

If you've read this poem then you'l probably not need to read the book
Part three should be the final chapter
Apologies for the spoilers, thanks for reading
And wish me luck

Don't know how I missed this, but again, you have done the subject matter soooo much justice! It was such an influential book for me and to have introduced it to your attention, and that you enjoyed it as much as I did, AND that it inspired you to create these wonderful writes, fills me with joy! Hugely impressed mate!☺

Cheers John, your comment means a lot. It really is one hell of a book though and I've read well over one hundred, this is definitely one of my top three. I just hope I can finish it. Like I said, I kind of feel trapped by my own creation. I will get it finished at some point though - Syd
