Poem -

You Could Have Been There

You Could Have Been There

It's now more than two winters ago
Since she has passed
Storms of emotions
Hail and snow
I didnโ€™t think you had the strength to last...
ย
The pain from mistakes
That you have made...
Puncture wounds
Are the source of the blood...
ย
Wear your heart on your sleave
For all to see
Learn to forgive.....
ย
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  Well I wish I couldย ย
ย
You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood...
ย
You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good
ย
You could have gripped
When she needed you...
ย
I guess your feet just sank in the bog
ย
You could have been there
Whe she needed you...
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

ย
The last three years of her life
Were a loosing fight
Tried to get help
Butย It never did any goodย
ย
The last three years of her life
My sister and Iย
We tried everything...
But red wine was thicker than blood
ย
Heated arguments on a hot summers day
Done your grandkids memories no good
ย
If I could take back the things that I said
Then believe me I certainly would
ย
You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood
ย
You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good
ย
You could have gripped
When she needed you...
ย
I guess your feet just sank in the bog
ย
You could have been there
Whe she needed you...
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

ย
I'm sorry that I lost trust in you
I thought you were trying to make her life hell..ย ย
ย
I thought it was revenge
For the call to the police
And the truth she would tell ...
ย
Revenge for involving the authorities and making you spend a night in a cell
ย
I'm so sorry that I lost trust in you...
I was convinced you were trying to make her life hell

I wasn't covinced you were concerned for herย
Not untill I saw a tear in your eye
I thought it was all revenge for the things she'd done
Revenge for theย days gone by...
ย ย
You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood...
ย
You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good
ย
You could have gripped
When she needed you...
ย
I guess your feet just sank in the bog
ย
You could have been there
Whe she needed you...ย
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

ย
Such a strong person
Reduced to such a mess..
She felt that no one understood
ย
Her strong foundations had rotted away
All that was left were splinters of wood
ย
It's now more than two winters ago
Since she had the strokeย ย
And you made the call for ambulance
ย
It's now more than two winters ago
I still love you Dad...
Everyone deserves a second chanceย ย ย

Thank you Candra. I'm sorry that you can relate to this (I usually say that phrase the other way around when someone comments on my poems)

Yes time definitely helps but not always heals. I appreciate your comment and I'm sure death doesn't surround you, you just must be going through a rough patch. I hope the future that lies ahead is much better for you - Sydย
